The Department of English at the University of Victoria will be the host institution for the Western Literature Association 's annual conference in 2014. The WLA returns to Canada remembering two very successful past Canadian meetings (Vancouver 1995; Banff 1998). The conference will bring 350 delegates to Victoria, including a large number of graduate students.
The membership of the WLA is close to 500, with members from most US states, from across Canada, and from the UK, Germany, Japan, and several other countries. The WLA publishes the quarterly Western American Literature . WLA is also the organization within which the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment (ASLE) was founded.
The conference title, "Border Songs," comes from Jim Lynch 's cross-border novel. The developing topic clusters West Coast literatures (and comparative studies of them), First Nations/Native American literatures, storytelling, and song will both draw upon and extend the research and teaching emphases in the Department of English.
