Victorian Media Conference Opens
Date: April 26-28, 2012
Location: Laurel Point Inn, Victoria
Victorianists from around the world gather this week in Victoria, B. C., for a conference exploring Victorian media in all its forms: books, periodicals, photography, early sound recording and early cinematography.
The Victorian Media Conference explores the rich field of Victorian media studies, from early recording and films to the mass market newspaper. Victorian people witnessed a veritable explosion of new technologies, including the photograph, phonograph, illustrated newspaper, telephone, telegraph, typewriter, and early film. Such media forms were mutually interpenetrating: the photograph affected the poem, the cinema the novel, the phonograph the telling of stories, and so on. Scholars will gather this week at this UVic-hosted conference to explore how this revolution shaped Victorians' sense of their world and themselves.
